Peter's Railway and the Moonlight Express 9th/10th May 2009

'He checked that the cylinder drains were open, wound the reverser into full forward gear, took the brakes off and very gently opened the regulator.' So young Peter takes the controls on the miniature railway he and his Grandpa have built.

Like Peter's Railway, the first volume in the Christopher Vine's self published series, this is a primer in engineering basics, packaged into a gentle tale about a grandparent, grandchild relationship - the stirringly titled trains actually delivers Peter's Granny to her birthday tea. The real driver of the story, though, is how the two will overcome design problems on their railway. The text is interspersed with simple explanations of how points, valves, bearings and suchlike work.

Excellent stuff for budding engineers - and for parents fearing tricky questions on a trip to the steam railway.
